Anyone raising a Jewish child in Columbia County knows that there are special challenges. That's why it's very important to connect with other Jewish families and to share experiences that richly confirm a child's Jewish identity. The Chatham Synagogue's two programs for children and their families-Kindershul and Hebrew School-offer opportunities to come together in a warm, caring, and fun environment. Families come to us from all points along the spectrum of Jewish knowledge and familiarity. We understand as well the special issues connected with intermarriage and find ways to make everyone feel comfortable. We are very fortunate to have in Patricia Moger a teacher who strongly feels that Jewish education should be about more than just imparting facts, but really about touching the spirit of children.
Geared for children from 3 to 7 years of age, this program introduces Jewish concepts in a family-friendly setting. This year's theme for exploration will be mitzvot-visiting the sick, hospitality, tzedakah, and more. Children will learn songs and blessings, create arts and crafts projects, and there's always a snack. Parents and younger siblings are welcome to tag attend. The Kindershul will meet five times this year-December 4, January 8, February 12, April 2, and May 7-always starting at 10:30 in the morning.
Children 8 through Bar and Bat Mitzvah age will learn the fundamentals of Hebrew and Jewish culture. Students will meet on most Thursday afternoons from November 3 until May 18 to learn about Torah stories and holiday customs and work on crafts projects. Because our school is small, each child receives personalized attention that is geared to individual learning styles and needs.
